If you doubleclick on a clip in the timeline it puts it into the Source view of the Monitor window. Then you can gang the source view to the program view.
Set the source view to see the audio waveform using the menu in the source view side.

Alt-double click the audio track will bring up the audio waveform in the source monitor.
